OpenAI, a US-based artificial intelligence organization that builds the ChatGPT chatbot, recently unveiled a new application programming interface (API) that allows users to create custom versions of ChatGPT for specific purposes. Such personalized chatbots are called "custom GPTs."
Deploying GPT
On November 6, OpenAI announced the release of custom versions of ChatGPT. These versions, called GPTs, allow users to create customized versions of ChatGPT for specific purposes, such as daily life, specific tasks, work or home.
"GPT is a new way for everyone to create a customized version of ChatGPT to be more useful in everyday life, for specific tasks, at work or at home," the organization shared in an X message.
Accordingly, the OpenAI developers have expressed confidence that the most incredible GPTs will be created by the community. They encourage everyone to create GPTs, regardless of coding experience, if they have experience to share.
On the other hand, OpenAI clarified that users have control over their data when using ChatGPT. They can choose whether their conversations will be shared with developers, third-party APIs, or used to improve the model. New systems have been implemented to validate user GPTs against usage policies, focused on preventing harmful iterations.
"We developed GPT so that more people can build with us. Community engagement is very important to fulfill our mission of building secure AGIs that benefit humanity. This will allow everyone to see the wide and diverse range of useful GPTs and get a more concrete idea of what lies ahead," stated OpenAI.
The developers added that they aim to involve more people, not just technical experts, in deciding what AI should do. They believe this will make AI safer and more relevant to human needs.
How does it work?
According to the press release, GPT can be customized according to specific use cases and preferences. It provides control through custom instructions that allow users to set preferences and automates the process using carefully crafted prompts and instruction sets, eliminating the need for manual copying.
Aside from being able to customize their creations, creators can also share them with others. Moreover, the developers noted that anyone can easily create their own GPT since no coding is required.
"Creating it is as simple as starting a conversation, giving it instructions and additional knowledge, and choosing what it can do, such as searching the web, creating images, or analyzing data," OpenAI writes.
In addition, the developers noted that users have the ability to define custom actions in addition to utilizing the built-in capabilities of the GPT. These actions involve granting access to one or more APIs to a custom GPT, allowing it to integrate external data or interact with the real world. Such integration may include connecting the GPT to databases, mailboxes, or even acting as a customer assistant, such as facilitating e-commerce checkout.
In addition, OpenAI announced that the GPT Store will be launched this month, featuring custom GPTs from trusted creators that can be searched and rated.
What is OpenAI?
OpenAI is a California-based research company founded in 2015 by a group of entrepreneurs including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Altman, the current CEO of OpenAI, is also the founder of Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project based on iris biometrics.
The organization is dedicated to developing safe and useful general purpose artificial intelligence (AGI) that will benefit all of humanity. They have developed several models, including GPT-4, the latest and most advanced version of ChatGPT to date. GPT-4 can solve complex problems with greater accuracy, and is more creative and collaborative than ever before.
