WSO2 increases developer productivity with the latest API management and integration offerings

Updated 4 months ago on June 22, 2024

Software developers face increasing demands to accelerate the creation of innovative new digital products, but these products are often based on a complex web of data, processes, services and APIs that need to be combined. WSO2 helps developers optimize their efforts and increase productivity with new features in WSO2 API Manager, WSO2 API Platform for Kubernetes (WSO2 APK) and WSO2 Micro Integrator.

Today's accomplishments include:

  • A single control plane manages the WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK data planes, providing powerful API management in Kubernetes environments.
  • The new artificial intelligence (AI)-based WSO2 AI Developer Assistant in the WSO2 API Manager control plane improves search in the developer portal and adds natural language API testing.
  • GraphQL support in the WSO2 APK provides accurate data access capabilities in the API APK for more efficient data retrieval.
  • The new WSO2 Micro Integrator extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code) offers an intuitive GUI with MI Copilot artificial intelligence to simplify integration development with natural language prompts.

"In an effort to accelerate innovation, software development teams are adopting composite applications and microservices, but they also need simpler and more efficient API management and integration technologies," said Christopher Davey, vice president and general manager of WSO2's API and Integration Software Division. With new AI-powered assistants, a single control plane for WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK, and the expansion of WSO2 Micro Integrator for VS Code, we are improving developer efficiency by offering developers a more user-friendly, productive and future-proof environment to meet their evolving needs."

More efficient and streamlined API management WSO2 offers two open source software products to meet the diverse API management needs of organizations around the world. WSO2 API Manager is WSO2's comprehensive, industry-leading API lifecycle management platform for managing APIs across the entire lifecycle of more than 60 trillion transactions executed globally each year. The WSO2 APK, launching in September 2023, was designed from the ground up to take advantage of the inherent benefits of Kubernetes while optimizing API management methods and workflows. The latest product releases enable software development teams to take advantage of the robust WSO2 API Manager API management plane and the efficient cloud-optimized WSO2 APK data plane in a Kubernetes environment.

Single Control Plane. The new versions of WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK, available today, can be customized so that the data planes of both products are controlled by the WSO2 API Manager control plane. APIs running in WSO2 APK gateways can now take full advantage of the control capabilities in the WSO2 API Manager user interface (UI) and developer portal/marketplace. As a result:

  • Software developers get an optimized development process thanks to the container-native platform and efficient API management.
  • API architects can develop comprehensive API strategies through a single platform.
  • API business owners can efficiently deploy a large number of APIs in a scalable and cost-effective way.

WSO2 AI Developer Assistant. Through the control plane, users of the WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK also get access to the beta version of a new intelligent assistant that uses natural language chat to improve developer productivity. The WSO2 AI Developer Assistant currently includes:

  • Artificial Intelligence-based search in the developer portal: Developers can simply describe what they need to do and quickly get recommendations on the most appropriate APIs.
  • AI-powered API testing: Developers can improve the speed, efficiency and accuracy of API testing with automatically generated test patterns, suggestions for effective test paths and pointers to the most appropriate API resources for testing a particular scenario.

GraphQL support for WSO2 APK. The latest release of the WSO2 APK supports GraphQL query language, so developers and API consumers can query services for the data they need. The result is easier development, better code maintenance, increased efficiency and flexibility.

WSO2 Micro Integrator is a comprehensive open source integration product that simplifies the connectivity of applications, services, data and cloud computing through graphical design with little code, providing the flexibility to support microservices and enterprise service bus (ESB) style deployments.

To create a modern, intuitive and efficient development environment for WSO2 Micro Integrator, WSO2 is introducing the WSO2 Micro Integrator for VS Code extension, which will be available as a developer preview on May 7, 2024, the first day of WSO2Con. Designed to improve the workflow and experience of integration projects, this extension allows developers to take advantage of the popular and user-friendly VS Code editor and integrates seamlessly with cloud platforms to interact with cloud services and APIs.

The extension also includes MI Copilot for development with artificial intelligence. MI Copilot allows developers to describe an integration problem in natural language, and MI Copilot automatically generates the necessary configurations. This dramatically reduces configuration time, simplifies development, and gets developers up and running faster. Availability and Support WSO2 API Manager 4.3 and WSO2 APK 1.1 are available today as open source products released under the Apache License 2.0. They are supported by a WSO2 Subscription, which provides access to WSO2 Update for continuous delivery of bug fixes, security updates and performance enhancements, and WSO2 Support for 24/7 support. Unified pricing means that customers can simply purchase a WSO2 Subscription and choose a hosting model - cloud, on-premises, or hybrid - based on their preferences.
